Let’s Start A Trend! Vintage Amber Glass

1 Comment on Let’s Start A Trend! Vintage Amber Glass

A while back I wrote a post called Vintage Trends I’m Kind Of Over – and I got a great suggestion over on Facebook from a reader. Why not highlight some stuff that I think is cool, but doesn’t tend to get a lot of attention? In other words, why not try to start my own trend? Why not, indeed! ;)

First up: I picked on milk glass in my Trends post, because, well – it’s everywhere. (For the record, I do like it, I’m just tired of seeing it.) You also see a lot of blue, aqua, green, and red glassware – but what you don’t see featured much is the color amber.

Now why is that? Amber glass comes in a lot of different shades – from light honey gold, to almost brown. I think maybe the brown vibe is what turns a lot of people off – brown is a hard color for a lot of people to get down with, for some reason…

I personally really like amber glass – it feels kind of homey too me, for lack of a better word. I took a look around and found some really great pieces – let’s check them out!

There are TONS of amazing amber glass hanging lamps – it was hard to choose just one to feature here. Seriously. TONS.

I’ve sold quite a bit of Viking glass different colors, and amber is always the hardest sell. I found these that I’ve never seen before, I mean how cool are they? I’m tempted to get them for myself… ;)

L.E. Smith’s Moon & Stars pattern is another one that comes in the more popular colors of blue, red and green – but look how pretty it is in this honey gold shade of amber!

There is a LOT of vintage beverage glassware in amber – drinking glasses, pitchers, etc. etc… Libbey is a great brand to look at for that kind of stuff, they are one of my favorites.

Anchor Hocking is right up there with Libbey – check out this new old stock set in their Lido pattern! Yet another case where the blue and green versions tend to get all the glory…

Of course I can’t do a post on glass without featuring a fun vase – this one is from a company I haven’t heard of before, I might have to do some digging about them! It’s just as cool as a Viking or Fenton piece, that’s for sure…

Another offering in amber from L.E. Smith…

So what do you think? Can we convince the vintage geeks out there that amber glass is something to love? Are there some of you out there already, happily collecting it despite (or maybe because of) its tendency to fly under the radar? Leave me a comment, or better yet, email photos of your collection to vintagegoodness@gmail.com. :)

Featured Collectible – Vintage Macrame – 70’s Craft Series #2

If you have followed me for a while you know that over the last couple of years I’ve developed a bit of a macrame obsession. So you can imagine the internal cartwheels I was doing when I found the holy grail of all vintage macrame scores a couple of weeks ago:

Macrame Hanging Plant Holder TableVintage Macrame Hanging Planter Holder Side Table

Yep, that’s a nearly 8′ tall hanging plant holder / side table and it is GORGEOUS. SO hard to part with – but it is up at auction on eBay right now!

Luckily, macrame was a really popular craft in the 70’s – that means there is still quite a bit of it floating around out there, waiting to be reclaimed. Not all of it is done well though, so it is especially fun to find pieces like the one I found, that were made by someone who had some skill, and took extra care to make their projects turn out nicely…

I actually have another hanging plant holder in my eBay store that has butterfly beads on it, with a matching ceramic planter – I’m kind of surprised it hasn’t sold yet!

Plant holders seem to be the most popular macrame craft, but they were not the only thing that people made – let’s take a look at what else is out there:

Featured Collectible – Vintage String Art – 70’s Craft Series #1

The next several Featured Collectible posts are going to be a series about one of my current obsessions – 1970’s crafts! It seems like there was just as big of a crafting trend happening in the 70’s as there has been in the last few years… Luckily a lot of those crafters’ work has survived to be re-discovered today! I will be forever grateful for all the “keepers” in this world… ;)

I’m starting off with vintage String Art – not only are there amazing finished pieces out there, there are also a lot of unopened, original kits that you can buy if you want to give it a try. Let’s take a look – as always just click the link below the photos to check out the listings!

Featured Collectible – Bennington Pottery

benningtonfaces2I had never heard of Bennington Pottery until last year, when I found two different tile trivets (a sun and a pig) at two different sales. I’m so glad that I did – they both sold, which is always awesome, but mostly I was happy because WOW did they put out some amazing stuff!! I really can’t believe that I went as long as I did without knowing that they existed… But now I do, and I thought I had better share, in case there was anyone else out there who hadn’t run across them yet…

Bennington Potters was founded by David Gil in 1948, in Bennington, Vermont. It is still in operation today, specializing in dinnerware for the most part, from the looks of what is currently for sale on their website. The new stuff is gorgeous, without a doubt, but of course what I am most interested in are the quirky vintage pieces that are floating around out there. Click the links below the photos to see the full listings!
